Building Connections

By spending more time with your students in a different setting, you foster a sense of belonging and community that goes far beyond the four walls of a classroom.

The 100 For Earth Initiative: A Paradigm Shift for School Culture

The 100 For Earth Initiative advocates for a transformative readjustment of school culture—a paradigm shift that places Earth Connection at the core of teaching and daily practice.

100 For Earth turns school grounds into living classrooms.  It is a school-based initiative grounded in 2 decades of practical experience. Our science-informed practices bridge the gap between student well-being and climate action, fostering the habits necessary for a sustainable future.

The initiative encourages school leaders and educators to prioritize Open-Air Learning as a fundamental right, scaling up nature-integrated practices from the playground to the pedagogy.

The 100 For Earth Framework

The four pillars help staff to integrate Earth stewardship into the heartbeat of their school culture:

  1. PEOPLE: Empowering teachers to move from indoor only to outdoors more, modeling regular presence in the open air.

  2. PROCESS: Review the curriculum and opportunities to utilize the school grounds as a living classroom, integrating nature into existing transitions and subjects.

  3. PLACE: Reclaiming the 100 meters outside the classroom door as a primary learning environment that fosters a sense of belonging and safety.

  4. PRINCIPLES: Cultivating a culture of stewardship where every action—from a 2-minute stretch to a more integrated-in-nature lesson—is an intentional investment in the health of our shared planet Earth.

By bridging the gap between the classroom and the open air, we ensure that the next generation doesn't just learn about the world—they learn to belong to it.

Shift School Culture Movement

The Core Mission

  • Move from "Indoors Always" to "Outdoors More": Shift the default school culture to include the open air as a fundamental learning space.

  • Enhance Wellness and Focus: Use science-backed nature breaks to regulate student behavior and improve concentration.

  • Climate Action Now: Start building a sustainable mindset at an early age by valuing and protecting local nature.

Who It Is For

  • The Whole School Culture: This isn't just for students; it includes adult staff and leadership.

  • Forward-Thinking Educators: For those ready to move beyond "recess-only" outdoor time.

  • Early Years & Primary Schools: Establishing these values when children are most receptive.

What It Offers

  • Practical Framework: Simple, low-friction strategies to use the 100 meters outside your door.

  • Science-Informed Tools: Exercises based on neurobiology (like optic flow and panoramic vision) to reset the nervous system.

  • Community Support: A network of like-minded educators sharing tips for taking learning outdoors.

Key Values

  • Local Nature First: You don't need a forest; your school grounds are enough.

  • Human Wellness: Prioritizing the mental and physical health of both students and teachers.

  • Stewardship: Creating a generation that feels a sense of duty toward the earth.
